Our Story

Founded in 2019, Dementia Care Warriors is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supporting caregivers through education, advocacy, and community programs. The organization began as an extension of a blog by founder Veronica Shanklin, who shared humor, encouragement, and practical tips from her own experiences navigating the challenges of dementia caregiving. As a grassroots organization founded by a caregiver for caregivers, we provide a "boots-on-the- ground" approach, offering respite scholarships, educational events, support groups, and more to help caregivers.

About the Founder

Veronica Shanklin’s caregiving journey began when she left her career as a Marketing Director in Chicago to care for her mother and grandmother, both diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. After 10 years of caregiving, she founded Dementia Care Warriors to address the gap in resources for caregivers in underserved communities.

As a dedicated advocate, Veronica has served on several boards and has been a vocal presence at the Alzheimer’s Association Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C. From community events to the national stage, she is committed to advocating for caregivers at every level. Her personal caregiving story has been featured in media outlets like O Magazine, Ebony Magazine, and the Dallas Morning News. Through Dementia Care Warriors, Veronica ensures caregivers access the support they need.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide non-medical resources and support to caregivers caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or related dementia.

Our Vision

We envision a world where dementia family caregivers receive the education, support and resources they need to thrive in their role.

Empowering Caregivers, Changing Lives

Our philosophy is built on four core pillars of C.A.R.E.:

C

Community

We create safe, welcoming spaces where caregivers can connect, share, and find solace, knowing they are not alone. Our programs foster a sense of belonging and reduce the isolation that so often accompanies caregiving.

Advocacy

We raise our voices for the caregivers whose challenges often go unnoticed. Through our advocacy efforts, we work to secure greater funding, legislative support, and resources, particularly for those in underserved communities.
